The Cost of Underfloor Heating

The cost of underfloor heating can vary from project to project and depends on the type of floor heating solution you want to install. For instance, a standard screed solution in a brand new property will tend to work out cheaper than a retrofit system due to requiring more materials and often more labour.

As a rough estimate, an electric underfloor heating installation will cost you anywhere between £60 to £90 per square metre. If you are looking at a water underfloor heating system you can expect to pay anywhere between £110 to £140 per square metre.

Underfloor Heating Installation Costs for New Build Properties

Installing underfloor heating in new build properties is a no-brainer in 2024, especially if it is a water underfloor heating system. A lot of the time the installation process can be integrated into the schedule of the building timeline, and is simple and inexpensive to install. Ground floors are typically built using a floor screed which is perfect for In-Screed Water Underfloor Heating Kits.

Underfloor Heating Installation Costs for Renovation Projects

Retrofit underfloor heating solutions are perfect for renovation projects however the cost is often a bit higher due to requiring more components for the installation, and on some occasions needing to dig up your existing floor. However, this isn't always required and we offer underfloor heating kits that don't require you to dig up your floor.

We offer a range of solutions for renovations, including our Adept AD-SLIM and AD-SLIM Lite kits which use retrofix panels, making installation easy and hassle-free.

If you are renovating a small room such as a bathroom or ensuite, an electric underfloor heating solution might be a better choice, such as a heating mat or loose cable system. When combined with a decoupling membrane, a loose cable system can be ideal and will cost a lot less to install than a water system.

Underfloor Heating Running Costs

As a rough guide using the latest cost of energy in the UK, electric underfloor heating can cost roughly £453 a year for a 10m2 room, where as a water underfloor heating system you are looking at closer to £112.

It is important to note that calculating an exact number purely depends on your property's build quality, insulation and which system you choose. If you have a room that is using an electric underfloor heating system that is also installed in a poorly insulated room, you can expect the running costs to be significantly higher.

Reducing Underfloor Heating Running Costs

  • Ensure that your property is adequately insulated below the underfloor heating system and that the room is also insulated properly.
  • Use heating zones that are controlled separately, such as a zone each for your kitchen, lounge, bathroom etc. This way it will allow you to control each room individually and dial in your temperatures accurately and efficiently.
  • Use programmable or smart thermostats to control your zones. Having the heating set to a schedule will help regulate temperatures and maintain consistent heat.
